There are many types of singing bowls in the market. There are old vs antique bowls where old bowls are just second hand bowls but not necessarily antique bowls. Post Tibetan exile, many bowls are now made in the factory. There are newly made bowls but they are usually made of bronze alloy of copper and tin called bell metal bronze. Cheaper bowls are made of only copper and tin. New bowls can also be machine made or hand made. Hand-made bowls have better resonance due to the way the metal has been hammered to produce a more natural sound. A trained curator can tell the difference by looking at the bowls. But most with a good ear for sounds can hear the different sound quality of the bowls.
If we are just displaying the bowls, aesthetics are a good consideration. However, if we are using singing bowls for healing and spiritual work, sound and energy are very important criteria. The preference is for antique bowls that are handmade while monks are chanting.

About Tibetan Singing Bowls
Tibetan or Himalayan singing bowls have long been used by Buddhist monks in meditation. In modern day, we use these bowls to help reduce stress, relieve pain, stimulate the immune system and produce beneficial changes in brain waves. When played, the singing bowls vibrate and produce a deep, rich tones with vibrational sound harmonics. It is an effective sound therapy where the vibrations moves the brain beyond Beta to deeper Alpha and Theta brain wave frequencies that induce deep meditative and peaceful states, clarity of mind and intuition. The sound frequency impacts the sympathetic nervous system, engages the relaxation reflex, slows down the respiratory, brain and heart rate, and disrupts the pain reflex creating a deep sense of well being. It harmonizes the cells, balance the body’s energy system.
